Having a wool rug in your home is a great responsibility. Not only are the expensive, but they are delicate too. When people get serious spills on their rugs they usually start to panic because a wool rug is not so easily washed without being ruined. However there are certain ways for you to wash your rug without damaging it at all.
Your first, and every important step, would be vacuuming the rug twice. Make sure to remove all the dust, crumbs and dirt off it. Why twice? Because if you have missed a spot or so, you would get it the second time. It is important also because you are going to use water on it afterwards and the filth inside is going to be hard enough to wash out.
Then look at your rug and focus on the stain spots using appropriate stain removers for wool rugs. It is going to take some effort to get this done if you have a lot of stains on your rug. But do not worry, after seeing how clean and new your rug will be after the cleaning process you will know it was worth the hard work.
Next, take the rug outside. Not everyone has a garden or backyard. If you do, it would be nice, if not, you could just take it out on the balcony, or anywhereoutside the house where you could lie your rug flat on the floor without getting the indoors wet.
If you have a garden hose outside that will come in very handy, if not, then you could use something else. You will have to get (if there isn't a water hose) a bucket filled with water, then add a little dish soap or even washing machine soap if you do not have special soap for rugs. All of it works.
If you do have a water hose then the first thing you will do is wet the entire rug with water. Next, you will add soap to specific areas, you could either start from the bottom to the top or the top to the bottom. Use a rug brush to scrub as hard as you can (it would be a lot easier if you had extra hands to help you around)..if you are not using the hose then you will be doing the same process only using a bucket instead of a water hose.
After scrubbing the entire wool rug you will need pour as much water as you think necessary to try and remove all the soap. Use a mop to get as much water out of the rug. If the water coming out of your rug isn't clear and seems filthy, then you will have to scrub again, repeat the same process over and over till you result with clean water.
After taking as much water out of the rug with the mop, you will then need someplace for your rug to dry. If you have a large rug then be prepared to lift something really heavy. You will most definitely need an extra hand with this. Hang it out in your balcony to dry. Do not leave it out rolled soaking wet overnight or else the next day you will realize you need to wash your rug all over again because of the smell.
After your rug is all ready and dry, sweep the room where you are going to place it, then position your wool rug the way you want it and see the difference of having a clean rug from having a filthy one.
